Notes:
Fantasia qui contraheza la harpa en la mañera de Ludovico (fantasy which imitates the harp in the style of Ludovico) is surely one of the most famous and remarkable works to have come down to us from the ‘vihuelistas’. This piece has essentially two sections; in the first, where the harp is openly imitated, small groups of notes are cunningly exploited in assymetrical groupings of two and three, interspersed with falling-note chord patterns. Very few actual chords are heard, and there are several changes of metre (beat pattern). As the piece comes to the second section, the texture suddenly changes, putting both the chord progressions and running passages together, combined with clever use of ‘false relations’ or notes in different modes heard in rapid succession. So startling is this effect that Mudarra himself wrote a note to the player: “from here to the end there are notes which may sound somewhat false, but hold them down well, and it will not sound bad”.
