Notes:
Staube was a pupil of J. S. Bach's in Leipzig who later joined a migration of German musicians, including Handel, to the active musical scene in Georgian London. At the end of his life, mired in poverty, Straube sold both his lutebook and instrument to the portrait painter Gainsborough. With its rapid mixed triplets and duplets, sudden harmonic shifts and triadic melodies, it is music firmly rooted in the pre-classical idiom of the generation after former his teacher, referred to as the Empfindsameder styl, or "play of emotions style". The Siciliano is a particularly fine piece, setting notes in the lowest register against a yearning chromatic melodic line.
