Early Music

The important thing about using period instruments is the way in which they affect our impression of the music.

In our recordings of solo and duo music for lute, early guitar, fortepiano, antique piano and harpsichord you will find pieces which show the appeal of period instruments and the way they enhance music written specifically for them. The music of Rameau and Couperin, or the lute pieces of Ennemond Gaultier and de Visée rely for their effect on a sound colour, which you will find very distinctive.

In some pieces the quality is outstanding regardless of instrumentation, for example the lute suites of Weiss or Bach, and the piano sonatas of Mozart. They seem to have a universality which goes beyond the choice or design of the instrument. But when heard in their intended medium they take on greater depth of meaning. This amplification of means is the reason we choose to play early instruments. Both Mozart and Bach represent the pinnacle of a particular tradition of musical art that spans generations of instrument makers and composers.
